Q: Why do I need to do a Web of Science search before I can use HistCite?

A: HistCite is not a search engine. Its function is to analyze Web of Science (WoS) search results in ways that help you better understand them. WoS searches are available from Thomson Scientific. The search terms you use and the way you conduct a WoS search define the literature of a subject area according to your unique perspective. HistCite then produces one-of-a-kind analyses that give you an organized view of the literature of the field you defined. In some cases you may gain new insights into the structure and relationships of your field. Currently, WoS is the only search engine the results of which are compatible with HistCite. However, there are plans for future versions of HistCite to accept other input. Also, you can manually input a bibliography of your own construction and have HistCite analyze it, as explained in the Help documentation.
