HistCite is designed to analyze and visualize literature searches made on the Thomson Scientific Web of Science (WOS) database. The extent of international coverage in the WOS database is determined by Thomson. WOS does provide substantial coverage of the international literature, with journals from over 45 countries included. However, the country of origin for a journal is not part of the WOS record. Thus, when HistCite is asked to sort a bibliography by country, it uses the country names as entered in the author address field in the records of WOS. Thus, the bibliography is sorted by the countries in the authors’ addresses, not by the country in which the journal is published. We believe that this is the best method to let interested parties know where the work described in the paper was actually done.
As part of its international coverage, the WOS database includes a significant number of non-English articles. When the records for such articles are added to WOS, their titles are translated into English. However, the full text remains in the original language of publication that is indicated in the WOS record. When working with HistCite, use the “Language” analysis to sort your bibliography by language of publication. Currently, the WOS database contains articles published in the following languages:
Afrikaans; Arabic; Basque; Bengali; Bulgarian; Byelorussian; Catalan; Chinese; Croatian; Czech; Danish; Dutch; English, Estonian, Finish; Flemish; French; Gaelic; Galician; Georgian; German; Greek; Hebrew; Hungarian; Icelandic; Italian; Japanese; Korean; Latin; Latvian; Lithuanian; Macedonian; Norwegian; Persian; Polish; Portugese; Provencal; Rumanian; Russian; Serbian; Serbo-Croatian; Slovak; Slovene; Spanish; Swedish; Turkish; Ukranian; Welsh; Multilanguage.
